Russian ballistic missiles kill two, injure eight in attack on Odesa port

The Russian military attacked Odesa’s port infrastructure with two ballistic missiles on May 23, 2025, killing two people and injuring eight, four of whom are in a serious condition, according to Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa Oblast Military Administration.

“The enemy struck Odesa’s port infrastructure with two ballistic missiles. One person was killed, and eight were injured,” Kiper wrote. 

He also reported that a port employee was killed in the Russian strike. Four of the people injured in the attack are in a serious condition, two in a moderate condition and two sustained minor injuries.

Later, Kiper reported that a 71-year-old resident of Odesa died in the hospital from the injuries he had sustained.

Earlier, Vitaliy Koval, the Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, told Ukrinform that approximately 60% of Ukraine’s export revenue is provided by farmers and agricultural processors, and Ukrainian food supports 400 million people worldwide.

He said that farmers in Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and other regions, who frequently endure enemy shelling, are producing vast amounts of crops and playing a crucial role in ensuring international food security.

The Russian Federation uses temporarily occupied Crimea as a military foothold for its military aggression from the south of Ukraine, shelling Ukrainian cities from the peninsula. Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly stated the importance of de-occupying the Crimean Peninsula.
